Bad Breath / Halitosis

This condition is difficult to categorise, but many catarrhal symptoms are associated with it. It is quite a common symptom, and can be the cause of embarrassment, and social reticence.

Catarrh-related causes of bad breath include:

  • Chronic mouth breathing due to a blocked nose, the cause of which may be allergy, polyps, deviated cartilage septum.

  • Large unhealthy tonsils full of smelly, cheese-like white or yellow lumps, sometimes with tonsillitis.

  • Dryness in the mouth and thickened mucous, caused by constant throat clearing due to a large uvula, which may also be related to snoring.

  • Chronic sinusitis, with thickened and smelly post-nasal discharge.

There are several different ways to improve these conditions, which may involve medical therapy or surgery (sometimes short laser procedures under local anaesthetic). For example, it may be necessary to unblock the nose, reduce the tonsils, remove the uvula (uvulectomy), drain the sinuses or treat nose allergy
